An American Education Story

Americans are well known for their excess, over worked, over-gadgeted, and overwhelmed but there aren't many who would say we are over educated. Why a country that overindulges in most areas and has every opportunity to find affordable education but still doesn't pursue knowledge is difficult to understand. My belief is that we are holding too tightly to our smartphones, watching our TVs entirely too closely and involved in things that only amount to a hill of beans. The Smartphones have made our world smaller and easier but is easier always better? I am not so sure. According to marketingcharts.com the average American spends nearly 3 hours on their phone socializing, playing games, texting and researching. That is a third of the time we spend sleeping and that’s twice the amount of time we spend eating! According to California State University, Northridge the number of hours the average American television is on is over 6 hours per day, that leaves time for what exactly? Then there are all those “Clubs” and kids extracurricular activities that keep parents going and going and going and going! Less is more, we need to downsize and decide what’s important! A good Education, so that you can have a job you like and get the pay you deserve. Family time without distractions, no phones, no internet, no TV and maybe just plain ole conversation. Instead of stretching our kids thin by allowing them to be involved with everything find out what they are good at and focus there, not only will it give you more time but it will let your kids be successful and have confidence in their abilities. Americans seem to be content with the status quo, this job will work, this debt will always be there and we are too busy to ever have family time. Here is my advice, get off the couch, put down the phone and dream a little so you can have a less is more but I sure do enjoy it kind of life.

Homes 4 Wounded Heroes

The Military Warriors Support Foundation (MWSF) is a non-profit organization that provides support for our nation’s combat wounded veterans who are transitioning out of the military. This is a fragile time for veterans where many fall through the cracks. To ease in their transition, MWSF has several programs to benefit the heroes, one of which is Homes4WoundedHeroes (H4WH). Through H4WH, they donate 100% mortgage free homes to wounded heroes and their families. These homes are all fully renovated, adapted for the hero’s injuries, in low-crime areas and in quality school districts.

What sets their program apart from other home donation programs is that their Foundation retains the deed of the home for the first 3 years. During this period, they provide 3 years of mentoring for the family. Each recipient is given a family and financial mentor to provide them guidance to develop the skills necessary to become happy and successful homeowners.

Their Mentor serves as their MWSF primary point of contact. They are there to help organize them for their move, ensure they get settled into their new home, and will continue to stay in regular contact with the family to ensure everything with them, and their home, is going smoothly. Once settled into the home, their Mentor guides them through a structured financial mentoring program; including monthly sessions to review budgeting, savings and debt repayment. The absence of a mortgage is a wonderful gift and MWSF wants to help families make the most of this opportunity! The goal of this program is to get families out of debt, pay off any loans they owe on, and even save for their future. This will provide families with a stable environment where they may not only focus on their recovery, but also build the foundation for a successful future for their entire family.

This amazing program would not be possible without generous donors. In most cases, the properties, along with the rehab services, are donated to the Foundation by major Financial Institutions. Help is needed with the cost associated with placing a family in the home and supporting them through their 3-year Mentoring Program. For $20,000, an individual or a business can be the official sponsor of a home and may be present at their home presentation. The sponsorship funds will support the costs associated with processing a family into the house and will support the cost of the 3-year Mentoring Program, which is vital to the family’s long term success.
